Why build our own motor power control? The short answer is expense. We found anything available for garden scale systems with modern technology is DCC based. We run DC through the track. To convert to DCC is an expensive proposition, before converting a single locomotive to DCC! Battery power adds even more expense per locomotive. Since we already have DC and block wiring, why not start with our own motor controllers? We can build one for each of a dozen blocks, and for less than other offerings.
We started with a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) approach. We investigated other H-Bridge based controllers using PWM. Even digital control of adjustable DC-to-DC converters.
